Windscreen / Windshield Wipers

Invented by an American by the name of Mary Anderson, to aid drivers in clearing the windscreen from inside the car.

On taking a trip to New York, Mary saw drivers emerging from their cars to periodically clear their windscreens by hand and in 1905, her spring loaded wiper arm was patented and this was replaced by a mechanical arm in 1913. By 1916 the windscreen / windshield wiper was standard on all American Cars and the design has remained very much the same.
